NR the student did not read any words
NF the student was stopped before finishing the passage, due to extreme reading difficulty
* continuing students were inadvertently tested at the end of the last class using only CR1; this is not the ideal test for these students; this problem will be fixed in future classes
** student increased time while reducing errors; we presume that these students are spending the extra time decoding words that were formerly skipped or guessed

Reading Class Results
Winter/Spring 1998, Batavia, IL

We are very grateful to the administrators of Batavia School District #101* of Batavia, Illinois for allowing us to particpate in their McWayne After School Enrichment Program during the Winter/Spring semester of 1998. During that semester we enrolled eleven students, of whom ten completed the course. Of the ten who finished, five first graders had placed into our Reading Mastery Level 1 class and five third graders had placed into our Corrective Reading/Decoding A class. Students attended our 45-minute classes after school four days per week for 14 weeks. Here's what happened:

The test used for comparison at the start and finish of the class is a 113-word text that is commonly regarded as being at a first grade reading level. The purpose of the test is to determine the student's proficiency in word attack skills by measuring both accuracy and speed. Both accuracy and speed are commonly regarded as prerequisites for comprehension. Although we do test for comprehension in class, we do not perform a comparative test of comprehension at the start and finish.

* Note: Project Pro and I Can Read! are not affiliated with the Batavia School District.
